Alam Khan : A Classical Sarod Concert

A recital of hindustani classical ragas by sarod master Alam Khan and accompanied by Vivek Pandya.

Born in California in 1982 he studied sarod under his father, the great musician, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in the guru-shishya tradition from age seven. Alam is the direct heir to the legacy of the Senia Maihar gharana which was established by his grandfather Baba Alauddin Khan in the 19th century in India. Alauddin Khan was the teacher of his famous son and daughter, Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi, and also the teacher for Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Bannerjee, and Aashish Khan as well.

Alam has also collaborated and toured with many artists over the years including Zakir Hussain, Swapan Chaudhuri, the San Francisco and Fremont Symphonies, Grammy winning Tedeschi Trucks Band, Beats Antique and most recently collaboring with Anoushka Shankar on their current album. Alam regards classical music his primary calling and cherishes the distinct sound, approach and imaginative process of the Senia Maihar gharana and regards his father as his ‘king’.

As the sole heir to the legacy left behind by his grandfather and father, Alam Khan has shouldered his responsibilities with poise and grace. Alam is the senior instructor o fmusic at the Ali Akbar Music College in San Rafael which he took over after his father's passing. He has continued learning from the vast archive of recordings of his father and has established himself firmly as one of the finest and most accomplished sarod players alive today.

Vivek Pandya is a young and much sought after tabla virtuoso. He has made a mark for himself as one of the foremost tabla players in the United States while still in his teens, and is known for his versatility as an accompanist as well as a gifted soloist.
