PHOTO STUDIO

South Asia Institute (SAI) has a comprehensive Photography Documentation Studio for the purpose of documenting and cataloging visual art and art objects. The photographs document the condition of every piece of art in the collection. Objects that require restoration are photographed prior to beginning the process of preservation and then once the restoration is completed. High resolution images for the production of catalogs, books, posters and other advertising materials are also created at the Photo Studio.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

South Asia Institute (SAI) Artist-in-Residence Program supports cultural and artistic exchange, nurtures interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary experimentation and the development of new work. The residency promotes the creative, intellectual and professional growth of artists, scholars, educators and other creative professionals, intended to foster understanding and allyship between South Asian American and other cultural communities of color.

SAI provides residents with the opportunity to be inspired in a variety of additional ways, including the cultural programming that it hosts, its location in a historic section of the city of Chicago, the surrounding parks and nearby Lake Michigan. During the SAI Residency, artists are also invited to engage with the regional community whenever possible. The opportunities for these interactions are numerous and varied.

The goal and expectation of the SAI Residency is to facilitate the production of a specific work (film, exhibition, artwork, performance, choreography, film or manuscript) which would debut in Chicago at SAI in the form of a performance, exhibition or special event.
