Immigrants Creatives Mentorship
South Asia Institute seeks to challenge divisive narratives surrounding immigration and second-generation citizens by showcasing South Asian culture and heritage through the universal language of art. Our mission is to amplify South Asian voices while fostering broader human connections, using art as a transformative tool to shift public discourse and challenge stereotypes. South Asia Institute has a strong history of creating platforms for cross-cultural dialogue and elevating marginalized voices.
Many immigrant artists we have encountered have expressed frustrations about systemic barriers to recognition and professional opportunities, feeling isolated from mainstream institutions that offer limited exhibition, commission, and residency opportunities. Many also struggle to make connections outside structured, institutional frameworks, creating professional and personal challenges. Building bridges between communities has been at the core of the mission at South Asia Institute since our inception. This is why we are inviting Immigrant artists of any heritage, experience, and genre to participate in a series of convenings that will be organized and hosted by South Asia Institute and are free of charge.
The Immigrant Creatives project is focused on professional development and providing structured mentorship programs for Immigrant artists and especially South Asian American artists. Peer interactions with other creative professionals are intended to help emerging artists acquire the skills to successfully navigate the professional arts ecosystem. In addition to creating a supportive ecosystem for artistic growth the relationships could lay the groundwork for future collaborations. The initiative will build partnerships between South Asia Institute, arts organizations and academic institutions, that will strengthen the arts community, foster creative expression, champion underrepresented voices, and contribute to a more inclusive and diverse cultural landscape in Chicago and beyond.
The Immigrant Creatives Project is supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
