South Asia Institute (SAI) invites guests to an immersive evening celebrating the rich culinary traditions of Kerala at Exploring Coastal Cuisines, the inaugural event of our Spices & Stories Culinary Arts Series Hosted in partnership with Thattu, one of Chicago's acclaimed Kerala restaurants, this special event explores the history, culture, and flavors of India's southwestern coastal state.
Known as the "Land of Spices," Kerala has long been a crossroads of global trade, where Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences blended with indigenous culinary traditions to create one of South Asia's most distinctive cuisines. During the evening, guests will enjoy a thoughtfully curated multi-course menu showcasing authentic regional dishes while learning about the stories, ingredients, and cultural practices that have shaped Kerala's food heritage.
The event will feature a carefully curated meal and engaging conversation between the restaurant's chef and owner duo, and guest moderator, acclaimed food historian, Colleen Sen, highlighting the origins of featured dishes, the significance of spices and local ingredients, family traditions, and the role of food in Kerala's festivals, communities, and everyday life. Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions, share their own experiences, and gain a deeper appreciation of the cultural narratives behind each course.
More than a dining experience, Spices & Stories reflects SAI's mission to preserve, promote, and present the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of South Asia. By bringing together culinary arts, storytelling, and community dialogue, the series creates meaningful connections across cultures and offers participants an opportunity to experience South Asia through one of its most universal art forms—food.
