Join us for another installation in SAI’s Close Looking Series, where visitors reap the benefits of slowing down, looking closer, and learning about works of art in the current exhibition, Unspoken Influence: The Legacy of Indus Gallery. As with all our Close Looking Series events, our curator Sydney Barofsky will lead an exercise focusing on a particular set of artworks. This installation of our series looks at students of the great painter Shakir Ali, who, alongside Indus Gallery founder Ali Imam, shaped the Pakistani art scene following its independence. Ali was one of the founders of the Lahore Art Circle, an art movement arising from the newly independent nation. A great painter and a great mentor, Ali’s legacy echoes through the work of his students, many of whom also became great mentors to the artists shaping the currents of contemporary art in Pakistan today. Students of Shakir Ali to be discussed include Ahmed Parvez, Bashir Mirza, Zahoor Akhlaq, and others.
