About the Organization

South Asia Institute is a vibrant South Asian American arts and culture non-profit dedicated to promoting the creative expression, heritage, and voices of South Asian communities in the Chicago and nationally. Through exhibitions, performances, festivals, workshops, and community programs, we provide a platform for dialogue, celebration, and cross-cultural connection. Our work reflects the diversity of South Asia and its diaspora—including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Position Summary

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of the organization and will lead efforts to grow our impact, expand community engagement, and ensure long-term sustainability. This role is ideal for a visionary, collaborative, and culturally grounded leader who is passionate about the arts and committed to advancing South Asian American representation in the cultural landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organizational Leadership: Provide strategic direction and day-to-day leadership in collaboration with the Co-founders and Board of Directors; Fundraising & Development: Lead donor engagement, grant writing, sponsorship development, and fundraising campaigns

  • Exhibitions & Program Oversight: Work with staff and artists to implement impactful programs and exhibitions, centered on South Asian American experiences.

  • Financial Management: Develop and manage the organizational budget; ensure transparency and accountability in financial operations.

  • Community & Cultural Engagement: Act as the primary ambassador for the organization; build relationships with artists, cultural institutions, community partners, and local South Asian organizations.

  • Board & Team Development: Support staff and volunteers; collaborate closely with a committed and culturally invested Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of and/or Connected to South Asian cultures and diaspora communities.

  • Minimum 3–5 years of leadership or management experience in the non-profit, arts, or cultural sector.

  • Prior experience in fundraising, development, and grant writing.

  • Strong organizational, financial, and communication skills.

  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, including artists, funders, and community leaders.

  • Passion for community-based arts and social impact.

Preferred

  • Experience working in immigrant or multicultural communities.

  • Knowledge of one or more South Asian languages, a plus but not required.
