South Asia Institute presents The Living Songs of Tagore, an intimate and immersive journey through the music, poetry, and philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore, performed by recording artist, educator, and Rabindrasangeet vocalist Maitreyee Chakraborty with live instrumental accompaniment.
Weaving together live music, literature, storytelling, and personal reflection, the performance explores Tagore’s enduring meditations on love, longing, nature, spirituality, resilience, identity, and the search for meaning.
Before each song, Maitreyee will share what the composition evokes for her, offering personal and cultural context that creates a deeper connection between the artist, the music, and the audience. Selected poems will also be presented, with English translations projected on screen to make the language, beauty, and emotional resonance of Tagore’s work accessible to a broad audience.
The program welcomes those encountering Rabindrasangeet for the first time as well as those returning to songs that have long been part of their lives. Rather than presenting Tagore only as a historic literary figure, The Living Songs of Tagore reveals his work as a living artistic tradition, one that continues to speak to contemporary questions of belonging, compassion, spirituality, and our relationship with the world.
