THE SHAPE OF BELONGING: Stories of Arrival, Memory & Becoming South Asian American

  • 1925 South Michigan Ave Chicago, IL 60616 (map)

Experience the premiere of a new documentary by Rahul M. Ghanta featuring personal migration stories and reflections shared by South Asian community members in Chicago.

Created through conversations with individuals and families across generations, the film explores journeys of migration, cultural memory, identity, belonging, and the many ways people build home while navigating new landscapes. Together, these stories offer a powerful portrait of the South Asian diaspora and its enduring contributions to the social and cultural fabric of the United States.

Following the screening, audiences are invited to participate in a community conversation with the film maker and storyteller, Jitesh Jaggi, exploring the importance of oral history, storytelling, and collective memory. How do personal stories shape our understanding of history? What is gained when communities preserve and share their experiences? And how do these narratives strengthen our understanding of the American experience?

This program offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from members of Chicago's South Asian community and reflect on the voices, memories, and journeys that continue to shape our shared future.

Presented as part of Illinois Humanities' Community Conversations initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
